EHF 2022 Day 10 When Sunday comes

Ouch up around 6 am clearly not keen to go to football. Missing a lot all the fans, the contact with the handball community of managers/refs/players. At 12:15 there is a Teams call with the France players and I want to be there and show my support. But midday is the time Brendan said we should be at House of Hammerton en route to the Emirates for the rescheduled Burnley fixture. The match and the travel mean that I should be able to come back on time to watch Germany v Sweden and Spain Norway after that.  Too late now for The Ticket Exchange !

The humbling defeat by a superb Iceland was indeed the largest defeat suffered by France since the euro competition started in 1994. There were a couple of 7-goal defeats but not 8. Hence the importance of that miss by Hugo Descat against the future H keeper. When Sunday comes we have dilemmas. Not helped by the utmost desire to work as I love my new job. But work is not everything in life when handball comes.

1994 Portugal I watched it with Canal Plus

1996 Sweden I may have watched it with Pathe Sports

1998 Italy I watched it with Canal Plus

2000

2002

2004  I listened to it with the radio as I was getting to the Balham platform en route to Selhurst

2006

2008 I watched it on TV at home in Paris for the final round of matches

2010 I was at home in Paris watching all the matches and met the players at the Adidas store

Poland are now out and Russia have very slim chances to get to the semis but a chance to grab the 5th place match slot. Russia missed the boat when they were confortably leading against a slightly hesitant Spain side, so close to end their Euro unbeaten streak. Poland in the men and women competition appear to have one lethal player and the rest of the team not able to up their game tactically and technically whilst their promising keepers are not delivering.

Let's stop now and let's get prepared to go to the match !

Sunday 23 January 2022

14h30

1D-2E

REPLACED BY

POLAND RUSSIA

17h

2D-1F

GERMANY SWEDEN

2-2

3-5 after 6 mins

4-7 after 12 mins

7-meter save

Palicka easy save keeps Sweden ahead.

Sweden efficiency and time management is to be admired

Surprised by the basic errors by Germany

Wanne cheeky goal 6-9 21’21

Ball pinched in defence acrobatically by Johansson.

Koster responded to Johansson 7-10 23’30

Jinx to Sweden since the praise. But I want Germany to do well

Sweden still prevailing 9-11 26’

Not the gripping match I wanted

The refs used to favour Germany.

Now they are doing the total opposite.

The incredible rush-in was so bad to my health.

Wieder in the middle. Stubborn. 10-11 29’10

Slog as expected though.

Claar clearly 10-12 at the break due to Palicka amazing save

Missing calls from each other!

What a crap day !

Eating salad, apple, feta and blueberries. Best use for the pie thing is today.

14-14 37’

Wanne on his own and Sweden back in front

But Damke finally had a goal 15-15 40’

Dearth of goals in a low scoring affair

Carlsbogard

Call with sister Isabelle

54’48 18-22

19-23

21-25 in the end!

Call with friend Karine for 52 minutes

Then call with Mum with Dad who is very tired

19h30

1E-2F

SPAIN NORWAY

First goal, a 7-meter after 2.35 minute and it goes HISPANOS way.

Empty goal for Aleix 2-0 4’13

Sagosen benefits from the JM absence due to a suspension 2-1 seconds later

Gullerud on his own gets to equalise 2-2 6’

Gullerud snaps another one annoyingly 2-3 7’

4-nil with no reply, not what I wanted.

Reinkind some kind of goal sadly 2-5 10’

Aleix dependence.

Short-handed Norway’s Bjornsen has a poisonous counter-attack 3-7 12’

Norway helped by the pettiness of these experienced refs.

Jorge gets his goal 5-8 13’35

What a pass by Norway and Overby overly good one goal 5-9 14’

All the Nordic teams are doing well at this euro. Its interesting to see that Finland never quite got into handball.

Jorge anticipated the overly ambitious pass by Norway and scored his second.

Spain not playing well and yet a more respectable 8-10 17’40

Gedeon on his own on a Figueras duty 9-11 18’30

Barthold is getting on my nerves. He scored freely two in a row 9-13 21’

Gurbi denied by Bergerud

Well done Gonzalo. Keeping Spain in the game

Gorgeous KEMPA goal by Norway after a welcoming 8-minute drought 10-14 28’

11-14 at half time

Maqueda finds the way 12-14 31’30

Attacking foul all day long but nothing given and then a petty 2-min given

And then a second suspension. Thank God they gave one otherwise it was borderline incompeetence

Toft squeezes that one but Ferran gets the immediate response 14-16 34’

Lucky Barthold wreaks havoc 14-17 35’

Toft lucky charm 15-18 36’15

What a goal by Overjordet 16-19 37’

Jorge fell so kindly 18-20 38’

You should stop the clock when you DO this. Incredible ref.

Change in keeper from Norway

Casado gets himself off the mark with a lovely goal 19-20 40’

Too soft on Toft and he lofts it 19-21 41’

Reinkind energy paying off 19-22 41’40

We saw Emilie with Corrales and Sagosen shirts after 44 minutes

2h23 on the train from Budapest.

Barthold increases his number of goals 19-23 46’

Rodrigo comes in.

8 minutes without a goal for Spain.

25% capacity in Slovakia.

How come Gullerud was forgotten 19-24 50’

The post helps Norway as well.

Good save by Rodrigo by Magdebourg’s O’Sullivan.

Jorge goes on his own on a free ride 20-24 52’

Marquez ensures Sagosen’s goal is cancelled out 52’40

AON on Spain’s shorts!

How long a passive play needs to be called. You Mugs of refs

Barthold again on his own 21- 26 55’

Double dribble

How come its not a two minute if it’s a 7-meter!

21-26 and less than 3 minutes left.

OMG not a good day in the office as a supporter.

Casado reduces the deficit from long range 22-26 58’30

But Sagosen thunderous shot makes it 22-27 59’

23-27 to Norway first in 25 years and incredible 17-game run stopped.
